As of April 18, there have been 10,802 COVID-19 deaths in Quebec. The province marked one year since the beginning of the health crisis only a little over a month ago.

MTL Blog spoke with the Quebec Health Ministry and Dr. Christopher Labos, a cardiologist with a degree in epidemiology, about how we got to this grim milestone and how we can do better in the future.

Teetering on the brink of another sad pandemic milestone, Quebec reported 9,999 total COVID-19 deaths, after withdrawing one death that an investigation found was not attributable to the novel coronavirus.

On the bright side, Quebec's COVID-19 hospitalizations took a dip, with the province recording a decrease of 58 patients on February 5, bringing the current total to 982. We haven't seen COVID-19 hospitalizations dip below 1,000 since December.

Quebec has been reaching record highs in terms of COVID-19 cases lately, surpassing 2,000 new cases per day. And, as of December 24, COVID-related deaths neared 8,000 in the province.

While some people have compared COVID-19 to the flu due to some shared symptoms, like fever and loss of smell, the coronavirus has been much deadlier, according to data from the Institut de la statistique du Quebec.

Quebec has seen the highest total number of coronavirus cases in Canada since the pandemic began — which means we're generally used to being the province with the highest number of new cases each day.

This week, however, Ontario is surpassing Quebec in terms of its new COVID-19 cases. Ontario, we just wanted to say we know how it feels and we're here for you.

Quebec's Institut national de santé publique du Québec (INSPQ) has released new data breaking down the province's COVID-19 numbers by age and sex.

The data, last updated on October 23, differs slightly from the province's official data, mostly due to the fact that some cases are reported as having an unknown age or sex.

On October 16, the Institut national de santé publique du Québec (INSPQ) released new data projecting different ways COVID-19 could evolve in the province during the second wave — and it looks like Quebecers need to do more to stop coronavirus cases from rising.

The report presents three possible scenarios: the first, called Scenario 0 (S0), is a hypothetical analysis of what could have occurred if the government had not put additional measures in place in red zones for the month of October.

Premier François Legault compared the COVID-19 death rate in Quebec to that of the United States in a press conference on October 15 — and while the numbers are striking, they don't necessarily tell the whole story.

"Two figures: 28 dead for 8.5 million of population, it's three deaths per million. Yesterday, in the United States, there were 970 deaths, [divided] by 331 million [is] three deaths per million," he said.

A certain downward trend has been observed during the last few days with respect to COVID-19 in Quebec. The October 13 report shows 815 new cases in the province, the smallest increase in nearly three weeks.

According to updated data from the Institut national de santé publique du Québec (INSPQ), we have to go back to September 25 to see such a low toll, when 733 cases were confirmed.
