With loads of animals up for adoption, including dogs, rabbits, birds and many other small animals, the Montreal SPCA is hoping to encourage the public to step up and provide a warm and loving home for its adorable animals, especially as the high season approaches — when the SPCA has an inflated number of animals up for adoption.

It’s a doggone travesty — Montrealers are discarding their cats and dogs at shelters because there's not enough pet-friendly housing, according to the SPCA.

"It's a problem every year," said Sophie Gaillard, director of animal advocacy and legal affairs at the Montreal SPCA. "Near moving season, we're flooded with calls from people that are not able to find housing that allows them to keep their animals. They're basically asking for help."

After receiving a petition from Quebecers, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ) plans to propose changing the rules surrounding cosmetic procedures performed on house pets. The rule change would ban non-preventive and non-therapeutic procedures for companion animals.

Minister André Lamontagne plans to present the full proposal in the summer of 2022.
