On January 15 at 7:15 p.m., Urgences-Santé Québec rescued a 19-year-old woman after she accidentally fell into the Saint Lawrence River in Montreal's Old Port. She was able to call emergency services herself.

The Service de sécurité incendie de Montréal intervened for her rescue and Urgences-Santé Québec sent advanced care paramedics, primary care paramedics and the Groupe d'intervention médicale tactique (GIMT), an Urgences-Santé spokesperson told MTL Blog.

Montreal emergency services support workers who maintain ambulances and medical equipment for Urgences-Santé will go on strike for 36 hours starting on Monday at midnight. The action will focus on administrative tasks and is unlikely to affect emergency services in the city, following a Saturday ruling by the Tribunal administratif du travail (TAT) that workers do not interfere with essential duties.

The union representing support staff says they hope the action will put pressure on their employer to reach a collective agreement that will entice and retain more workers to the field.

An unhoused Montreal woman died near Berri-UQAM metro station early on Thursday morning, marking the second death of a homeless Montrealer in the last 10 days.

Urgences-santé spokesperson Sébastien Coulombe said 911 received a phone call at 1:20 a.m regarding a woman, who he said was in her 60s, requiring medical attention on the corner of boulevard de Maisonneuve and rue Saint-Denis.

Urgences-santé says there were five times as many "drownings and near drownings that led to a 9-1-1 call" in June 2021 as there were in June 2020 in Montreal and Laval.

The ambulance service reported 20 such calls last month. In June 2019, there were 12 calls.
