The Just For Laughs 2024 edition will not be taking place this year in Montreal after all. The renowned comedy festival, which takes over Downtown Montreal each and every summer, has been cancelled.

The Groupe Juste Pour Rire Inc., which owns and operates the Montreal festival, announced on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, that it has filed a Notice of intention to make a proposal under Canada's Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act.

"Unfortunately, the 2024 edition of the Just for Laughs / Juste pour rire festival will not take place, at least not at the same time and in the same form as it customarily has," the company said in a press release.

Per the Juste Pour Rire board of directors, all available alternatives were considered before making the choice to cancel the Just For Laughs festival this summer. However, the organization's financial situation has left them no choice but to restructure the event.

"This process will allow JPR to seek investors or strategic purchasers for all or part of its business, to maximize value for stakeholders and hopefully preserve going concern operations as much as possible," Groupe JPR said.

Throughout the restructuring process, which Groupe JPR has not outlined in detail just yet, Just Pour Rire operations will continue on a "scaled-down format."

Groupe JPR believes that the restructuring will allow the business to "emerge stronger and healthier." Considering the festival's rich 40-year legacy, it's safe to say that Montrealers and visitors alike are hoping the Just For Laughs festival makes a swift and successful return in 2025.

Luckily, Groupe JPR remains optimistic that the festival will return next year. "Once the restructuring is completed, we hope that the festival will take place in 2025."

Groupe JPR did not confirm whether this affects JFL-related events including Zoofest. MTL Blog has reached out to the Just For Laughs company for more information. We will update this article as soon as we hear back.
