As autumn settles in, the number one thing on many Montrealers' minds is getting some sweet comfort food. But always the conscious types, we're not ones to just get any comfort food — we need it to be locally-sourced and most importantly, relatively healthy. Enter TOPO flatbreads, Montreal's latest and greatest BYOB gourmet flatbread shop that is serving up some serious eats to keep you warm through chill evenings.
TOPO Flatbreads is one of the city's newest restaurants and perhaps the one with the most humble intentions.
Owners Paul Lanza and Ben Gilker have one mission: to offer locally-sourced food with premium ingredients, all at a reasonable price.
What do the owners have to say?
"We're trying to get as local as possible for everything and we want to keep it very simple so people can get something good every time," said Lanza.
Located in downtown Montreal at 2004 ave Hôtel de Ville, TOPO hopes to stand out amidst a sea of construction and fast-food restaurants.
"The people living and working here want something that is fresh and new and reasonably priced," underlined Lanza.
Literally surrounded by orange cones on the corner of Hôtel de Ville and Ontario, TOPO might seem impossible to get to but once you figure it out, it's totally worth it.
"We joke that we're offering that 'authentic Montreal experience' with construction at the door," said Lanza.
"So it's not a terrasse exactly but there's a park right around the corner and Cégep du Vieux-Montreal is right across the street so you can eat your sandwich."
What's on the TOPO menu?
Despite appearances, the sandwich is quite filling.
Using the freshest local ingredients is of paramount importance at TOPO and everything is seasonal.
The restaurant caters to every taste and diet with gluten-free and vegan options, too.
With a changing menu and weekly specials, patrons can always try something new.
And while BYOB may not continue in the future, Lanza mentioned that they might try to get an alcohol license to offer local beers.
"The big thing for us is to support local. If you eat at TOPO, you're supporting local produce, local farmers, local businesses, and two guys that just want to make you a great sandwich."
