The era of mandatory masks in public places is coming to an end in Quebec as of midnight on May 14. After several postponements, the decision that was announced on May 4 remains in place. During a COVID-19 update on Wednesday, however, Interim National Director of Public Health Dr. Luc Boileau reminded the public that masks will still be required in some spots.

“As of Saturday, wearing a face-covering will no longer be required in closed, or partially open, public places. It will however remain recommended for use by people who need it, like those most vulnerable to infections… those who are currently infected, and those who do not want to catch the virus. It is a choice that we must respect, ”said Dr. Boileau at the press conference.

Quebec's mask mandate will lift on May 14, except for on public transport and in clinics, hospitals, and care homes. The province's Interim Public Health Director Dr. Luc Boileau made the announcement on Wednesday, saying COVID-19 case counts are under control at the moment.

"We're seeing more tangible, hopeful signs. The number of hospital admissions and outbreaks is better. Absences at schools and within the health network are down," said Boileau.

Quebec Interim Public Health Director Dr. Luc Boileau will give a COVID-19 update on Thursday afternoon, following a spike in hospitalizations this week. He will be joined at 1 p.m. by the province's Associate Deputy Health Minister Dr. Lucie Opatrny.

Just over one hundred people were admitted to the ICU on Wednesday and 2,381 to the hospital, up 100 from the day before. The most recent COVID-19 numbers show the province has 2,330 new cases and 26 deaths.

Quebec Public Health put their foot in their mouth on Thursday afternoon when the daily COVID-19 update on Twitter linked to a Pornhub fetish video, instead of the usual breakdown of pandemic case counts and infection rates.

When visitors clicked the link in the original tweet, they were taken to an amateur porn video titled "Femdom feet worship." The 10-minute film features a lot of heavy sighing while someone in a mask kisses and sucks on toes.

COVID-19 hospitalizations in the province have been on the rise this week. In the past 24 hours, Quebec reported 145 new patients in care bringing the total to 1,938 and marking the highest jump since January when a curfew was still in effect.

Public Health recorded 67 people in intensive care, a decrease of two compared to the previous day. While 294 new people have been hospitalized, 149 were also discharged.
