If you have purchased a Bissell vacuum over the past few years, then a recent recall issued by the Government of Canada and Costco Canada could apply to you.
Costco shared a statement regarding five Bissell vacuum models affected by the ongoing recall, originally published on February 2, 2024.
The government health agency is urging all Canadian consumers who may have the recalled Bissell vacuum to immediately stop using it as they may overheat and emit smoke, "posing a fire hazard," the recall warning indicates.
What You Need To Know: The products in question include the Bissell Multi Cordless Hand Vacuum (Costco Items #1107599, #2107599) and the Multi Reach Cordless Stick Vacuum (Costco Item #1189915). Bissell is voluntarily recalling multiple vacuum items, including the items from Costco Canada listed above.
According to Costco's announcement, the recalled vacuums may contain a battery pack that can potentially overheat and emit smoke, posing a fire hazard to consumers.

- Model 1985C
- Model 2151
- Model 21518
- Model 2151C

ICYMI: As of January 17, 2024, the company has received 1 report of a battery pack sparking and overheating resulting in a minor burn injury in Canada. In the United States, the company has received 16 reports of the vacuum cleaners smoking and emitting a burning odour. Six of the reports included the battery pack catching fire, 3 of which resulted in minor property damage and 1 resulting in minor burn injury, per the recall page.
What Comes Next: Verify if you have the affected Bissell vacuum by checking the model number located by removing the dirt tank. The model number is listed in a large black bar on the product label.
If you do have the recalled item, stop using it immediately. Bissell recommends depleting the battery by removing the attachment from the hand vacuum and turning the machine on until it stops on its own. Additionally, you may return an affected product to a Costco warehouse to obtain a full refund.
"We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause," Bissell said.
