With Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day aka Fête nationale du Québec behind us, and July 1 fast approaching, the time has come to celebrate Canada Day in Montreal.

The good news? Another long weekend is upon us! The bad news? Not everything will be open or operating as per its regular schedule.

Whether you're moving on Monday, planning to relax and enjoy the day off work or hitting up as many Canada Day festivities as you possibly can (many of which are free, by the way), it's important to be aware of what's open and closed on Canada Day 2024 in Montreal.

While you can trust the information given here, we still recommend doing a bit of your own research or calling ahead before you go somewhere to be on the safe side. Operating hours may be different than normal and are subject to change — there's nothing worse than arriving at your destination, only to find the doors locked.

What's open in Montreal on Monday, July 1?

  • Collections (garbage, recycling, compost etc.) that normally take place on Mondays are maintained for all boroughs.
  • Ecocentres, according to the usual summer schedule.
  • Space for Life: The Biodôme, Biosphère, Botanical Garden, Insectarium and Planetarium.
  • Public Markets of Montreal (Atwater, Jean-Talon, Maisonneuve, Solidarity and Neighbourhood Markets).
  • The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) network will run on a holiday schedule.
  • Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ) branches except those located in shopping centres.
  • Depanneurs, gas stations and many restaurants and bars.
  • Many grocery stores and pharmacies (though some may choose to close).

What's closed in Montreal on Monday, July 1?

  • Bureaux Accès Montréal (BAM) and City of Montreal permit counters.
  • Municipal courtrooms.
  • The city’s administrative offices and borough halls.
  • Société québécoise du cannabis (SQDC) branches.
  • Larger malls and shopping centres.
  • Banks.
  • Canada Post: No mail delivery or pick-up in Quebec. However, private-sector post offices can stay open (such as those operated by retailers, like Pharmaprix) according to the hours of service of the host business.

In terms of the City's arenas, swimming pools, libraries, cultural centres, and sports facilities, schedules vary by borough so check the facility’s webpage before you head out.

You can still contact the City by calling 311 on July 1 between the reduced hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Online services are available at all times if you want to submit an online request; however, requests sent by email will be processed on July 2.

Finally, don't forget that this year's Canada Day Parade has been cancelled.

Happy Canada Day, Montreal!
