The Royal Canadian Mint unveiled a new $20 coin last fall with a few features that you won't find on just any average coin. Not only is the $20 coin rectangular but it also glows in the dark.

The 1 oz. Pure Silver Glow-in-the-Dark Coin – Canada’s Unexplained Phenomena: The Duncan Incident depicts a story dating back to 1970. Reportedly, a nurse at a hospital in Duncan, British Columbia, opened the curtain in a patient's room, only to be met with a glowing UFO.

Per the Royal Canadian Mint, the nurse described seeing a "large saucer-shaped craft with a glass-like dome top. Inside the object, which was estimated to be 50 feet (15 metres) in diameter and illuminated from the bottom, two male-like figures clad in dark cloth appeared to be standing in front of a large panel."

The coin's colour-over-engraved reverse depicts this very story and glimmers when viewed under a black light, which is included in your purchase.

Designed by Canadian artist Patrick Bélanger, the reverse of the rectangular Canadian coin features a stunned nurse looking out into the night sky only to be met with a brightly illuminated spacecraft. "The design ... is arguably one of my favourites so far," Bélanger said.

"The contrast of the drab hospital room against the bright lights outside the window gave the coin a mysterious feel to it... and I am loving it!"

The obverse of the Canadian coin features Susanna Blunt's effigy of the late Queen Elizabeth II. The obverse also bears a special marking that includes four pearls symbolizing the four effigies that have graced Canadian coins and the double date of her reign.

With a mintage of 6,500, the coin weighs over 31 grams and has a diameter of 49.80 mm by 28.60 mm. While its face value is $20, it will cost you slightly more to get your hands on the new coin.

Canadian coin collectors can purchase the rectangular glow-in-the-dark coin on the Royal Canadian Mint's website for $139.95. When purchased, your coin is encapsulated and presented in a black Royal Canadian Mint-branded clamshell with a black beauty box.

Collectors have already gotten their hands on the new coin, calling it "very unique and wonderful."

"Took advantage of the Black Friday sale and treated myself to a little gift. I received this coin in the mail today, it arrived so fast! I didn't realize it also came with a blacklight which I thought was cool. My kiddo was super excited to turn off the lights and shine the UV on it," one reviewer wrote.

As of February 8, 2024, the collector's coin has been marked as "sold out."
