The Royal Canadian Mint has unveiled a remarkable new $20 coin featuring crystal detailing at its centre, reminiscent of sparkling. While the twinkle will certainly grab your attention, it's the shape of this Canadian coin that truly entices coin collectors and coin enthusiasts alike.

The $20 Pure Silver Hexagon Coin is well…in the shape of a hexagon. The six-sided coin is a first for the Royal Canadian Mint and perfectly complements the six-sided snow crystal engraved on its reverse.

The coin's outline "emphasizes the elaborate form of the snow crystal engraved on your coin’s reverse, which is dotted with a sparkling clear crystal," the Mint said on its website.

The reverse of the coin's stellar dendrite ice crystal was captured by Canadian photographer Don Komarechka and later reproduced by Royal Canadian Mint engravers. Coin collectors will be able to see how the finish directs light onto the six frosted, fern-like branches, all while the glistening crystal centre adds a touch of winter magic.

"Stellar dendrite snowflakes are classics: when you imagine a snowflake, this is what your mind usually conjures, whether you are 8 or 80 years old […] Such a fleeting beauty, never to be repeated again, is a gift that nature provides us in uncountable quantities," Komarechka said.

The obverse of the coin features the effigy of the late Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. The obverse also bears a special marking that includes four pearls symbolizing the four effigies that have graced Canadian coins and the double date of her reign.

With a mintage of over 8,000, the hexagonal coin weighs 31.41 grams and has a diameter of 42 millimetres. While its face value is $20, it will cost you slightly more to get your hands on this glistening coin.

The pure silver coin can be purchased on the Royal Canadian Mint's website for $139.95. Following your purchase, your coin will come packaged in an innovative new graphic paperboard case that also holds the certificate of authenticity. An insert allows you to easily display your encapsulated coin, the Mint said.

Countless collectors have already purchased the crystal snowflake coin, describing it as "unique," and "exquisite." Other reviewers said that the new Canadian coin is "absolutely breathtaking."
