The Royal Canadian Mint has released a brand new fifty-cent Canadian coin and it's holiday-themed.

The new $0.50 coin, titled 50-Cent Lenticular Coin — Holiday Sledding, features a polar bear and an arctic hare sledding with Christmas trees in the background. Both animals are wearing matching teal scarves as they sled downhill amidst the winter snowfall.

The coin itself was inspired by holiday magic and how winter sledding brings to mind the "memories of seasons past and present, and the fun to be had whenever Canadians flock outside to take advantage of our very winter wonderland," the Royal Canadian Mint said on its website.

While the wintry landscape is whimsical and endearing, the Mint upped the ante with this coin after using lenticular technology that allows for the sledding scene to seamlessly transition between two different images. When you tip the coin to change your viewing angle, you'll be able to spot the polar bear and hare both looking at one another followed by the scene of them sledding downhill.

The sledding scene was by Canadian illustrator Darren Booth. "For this particular design, a connection between the animals was an important element. Having them look at each other implies a connection […] The scarves also indicate movement when they’re blowing in the wind, as the animals ride together down a snowy hill on a beautiful night," Booth said.

The obverse of the new coin has the effigy of the late Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Susanna Blunt. The obverse also bears a special marking that includes four pearls symbolizing the four effigies that have graced Canadian coins and the double date of her reign.

The Royal Canadian Mint created 30,000 of the holiday-themed coins, which weigh roughly 12.5 grams and have a diameter of 35 millimetres.

Labelled as one of the Mint's "most affordable coins," the face value may be $0.50, but it'll cost you slightly more to get your hands on it. Canadian coin collectors and enthusiasts alike can purchase the holiday-themed coin online for $34.95. When purchased, you will receive the coin encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded clamshell black beauty box.

Collectors of Canadian coins were quick to review the new fifty-cent coin, making it clear it's well worth the purchase. "Great 50-cent coin for personal collection, gift, or other," one collector wrote. "The lenticular image depicted is cute and works once you find that perfect angle to tilt the coin to get the full effect and enjoyment of it […] I'm 48 but still love any depiction of winter, it reminds me of being a kid!"
