A Fire In The Plateau Sent Billowing Black Smoke Into The Sky Above Montreal

The neighbourhood around the fire has no power.

Videos that appeared online this afternoon showed billowing black smoke emanating from a Plateau Mont-Royal building. Over 2,000 residents in the area are without power.

The Service de sécurité incendie de Montréal's Twitter page advised Montrealers to avoid the area after a third alarm rang on rue de Mentana and ave. du Mont-Royal E.

The warning signalled that a power outage was possible. 

As of 3:45 p.m., Hydro Quebec's service interruption map indicated that 2,290 customers were without electricity in the area of the fire. The outage began at 3:17 p.m. and is expected to end by 6 p.m.

Police and the fire department have not yet publicly stated the cause of the fire. MTL Blog attempted to reach out to both departments for more information.
