autorité régionale de transport métropolitain

The Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain (ARTM) is steering Montrealers away from traffic jams this month and onto the scenic St. Lawrence River with the launch of the 2024 river shuttle season. The water taxis serve as a full-fledged commuter service, designed to make city travel smoother and more enjoyable.

With ongoing construction clogging critical points like the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine tunnel, the re-introduction of the shuttles is a timely option for daily travellers looking for a break from the gridlock.

Car owners across Montreal, including the suburbs and even off the island, will have more to pay for their annual vehicle registration tax in 2024. The Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM) is set to collect a $59 registration tax on passenger vehicles, which is expected to raise more than $125 million a year to fund public transit in Greater Montreal.

The tax will apply to all passenger vehicles registered in the CMM and the City of Saint-Jérôme and will be indexed annually based on the consumer price index. Since car owners in Montreal have already been paying this fee since 2011, the fee will simply go up from its current price of $45.

Montreal's regional transit authority is expanding its summer river shuttle service after testing the waters with last year's single-stop pilot project. Starting in June, you'll be able to catch a water taxi in Montreal's Old Port and coast to more destinations, including Île Sainte-Hélène, Longueuil, Boucherville, and Pointe-aux-Trembles. Routes between Bellerive and Charron Island, and Boucherville and Bellerive will also be available.

Walking or biking to off-island destinations can be taxing, so the Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain (ARTM) is hoping you'll take a water taxi instead. But the

For a few months now, Montrealers have been able to scan their OPUS card with their phone to find out how many fares they have left. What's more, you might soon be able to buy your OPUS pass on your phone with the updated Chrono app, according to the Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain.

In a statement, Benoît Gendron, director general of the ARTM, said that "as travel needs are currently less predictable, the ARTM and its partners are doing everything to simplify the return of users to safe, flexible and efficient public transport."
