The Ministère de l'Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l'Alimentation au Quebec (MAPAQ) has hit a handful of Montreal fast food restaurants with hefty health inspection fines.

The MAPAQ determined many of the restaurants were not operating in accordance with its health and safety standards, many of which were fined for improper food temperatures and storage, premise cleanliness and staff hygiene issues.

Here are the five Montreal fast food spots to look out for.

Starbucks

The MAPAQ inspected a Montreal Starbucks on November 29, 2023, fining the café $1,000 due to its lack of cleanliness. According to MAPAQ, the Montreal Starbucks, located at 41, boul. de la Cite-des-Jeunes in Vaudreuil-Dorion, "was not free of all species of animals, including rodents, and insects or their excrement."

While the inspection took place last fall, the judgement, in collaboration with the Montreal Municipal Court was made on February 21, 2024.

Subway

The MAPAQ also fined a Montreal Subway sandwich shop $1,000 on May 15, 2023. The final judgement, in collaboration with the Montreal Municipal Court, was officially made on January 26, 2024.

The Subway, located at 3250, boul. Henri-Bourassa E., was fined due to improper food temperature and storage. According to the MAPAQ, "heat-alterable products, except whole fresh fruit and vegetables, must be cooled without delay and maintained constantly at an internal and ambient temperature not exceeding four degrees C until delivery to the consumer, except during the time required for the application of a manufacturing process or treatment recognized in the food industry and which requires a higher temperature."

Tim Hortons

Following an inspection on December 12, 2022, a Montreal Tim Hortons has been hit with a $3,500 fine from the MAPAQ. The health agency fined the Tim Hortons as it was not "free of all contaminants and pollutants," the MAPAQ judgment said.

The Tim Hortons is located at 6125, boul. Monk in Montreal's Ville-Émard borough.

La Belle Province

The MAPAQ has also fined a Montreal La Belle Province fast food restaurant $1,400 due to cleanliness issues. According to the health agency, "the place or vehicle must be free of contaminants, pollutants, animals including insects and roars or their excrements."

The La Belle Province is located at 9474, boul. Saint-Michel was hit with the fine on September 19, 2023, with the final judgement, in collaboration with the Montreal Municipal Court, having occurred on March 29, 2024.

Second Cup

The MAPAQ also fined not one, but two Second Cup locations in Montreal. The first, located at 1275, av. Bernard was fined a total of $1,000 on September 25, 2023, with a final judgment date of April 4, 2024.

The MAPAQ fined the Outremont location due to improper food temperature and storage. Similarly, the health department also hit a West Island Second Cup with a $1,000 fine for the same reason. "Heat-alterable products, except whole fresh fruit and vegetables, must be cooled without delay and maintained constantly at an internal and ambient temperature not exceeding 4C until delivery to the consumer," MAPAQ said.

The West Island Second Cup is located at 14845, boul. de Pierrefonds.
