Montreal in the springtime is a beautiful place to be — until you remember that the warmer seasons are also construction season. The orange cones will be back, although perhaps less so this year, and construction on Highway 15 towards Laval is also picking up again.

The Minister of Transportation announced on May 12 that paving work will be starting again, both on Highway 15 and on the Médéric-Martin Bridge. Work is set to begin on May 15 and continue through October 2023. Hooray!

Beachclub and Beach Day Every Day entrepreneur Olivier Primeau says his Laval home was shot at by unknown assailants in the early hours of Tuesday, May 2. The Laval police force was called to the scene at 9 a.m. by a building manager after the shots were fired closer to midnight, according to La Presse.

Several windows at Primeau's condo have since been boarded up, and an investigation is underway to determine who executed this attack and why.

Political will is aligning behind a transit project that would link Montreal and its northern suburbs. The mayors of Laval, Montréal-Est and the North Shore municipalities of Terrebonne, Mascouche and Repentigny are now calling for a new line connecting their cities to Montreal's East End, including direct connections to the blue and green lines of the Montreal metro.

Officials are already studying the possibility of a so-called "eastern structural project" that could bring new rapid transit to the northeastern part of Montreal Island and beyond. This project follows in the footsteps of the defunct REM de l'Est, a plan to install a new light-rail line between Montréal-Nord, Pointe-aux-Trembles and downtown Montreal.

Municipalities north of Montreal are teaming up to create a sprawling new park. As planned, the park would total 5,000 hectares and stretch 42 kilometres along the Rivière des Mille Îles.

The primary goal is to conserve the nature along the river, which Minister of the Environment Benoit Charette described in a press release as particularly "rich in biodiversity." According to Laval Mayor Stéphane Boyer, almost two-thirds of the plant and animal species present in Quebec can be found in the Rivière des Mille Îles, on its eponymous islands and along its shoreline.

On Thursday, Quebec Premier François Legault visited the site where a Laval city bus crashed into a daycare on Wednesday, killing two children and injuring six others. A 66-year-old man was found murdered in a Laval parking lot off Highway 440 on Tuesday morning. The victim had been shot repeatedly in the upper body.
