The Royal Canadian Mint has rolled out a brand new $2 coin in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Canadian artist Jean Paul Riopelle. The $2 colourized special wrap roll features two geese from one of Riopelle's masterpieces, L’Hommage à Rosa Luxemburg.

Each colourized special wrap roll contains 25 $2 coins, all of which bear a selectively coloured reverse, which per the Royal Canadian Mint, "captures the spirit of both the original art and the artistic genius behind it."

The 2023 $50 1-ounce 99.99%Pure Gold Maple Leaf Single-Source Mine bullion coin is entirely made up of gold from Newmont's Éléonore mine in Northern Québec and has been "expertly refined by the Mind under a rigorous segregation protocol," the Royal Canadian Mint said in a press release.

The Royal Canadian Mint is issuing a brand new $2 coin in honour of the late Queen Elizabeth II. And this is certainly not your average toonie: the coin is embellished with a black outer ring.

The coin, which is set to go into circulation later this month, will include most of the standard features a regular toonie has, such as a golden centre, the queen's name and effigy, and the traditional Brent Townsend polar bear design on the core of the reverse. As for the black ring, the Royal Canadian Mint decided to go for something reminiscent of a mourning armband.

Canada is getting a brand new toonie commemorating a historic hockey moment — and no King Charles III's face will not be on it, but Queen Elizabeth's will. The Royal Canadian Mint announced on September 28 that a new $2 coin will be launched and later circulated across Canada to celebrate Team Canada's "triumph" over Team USSR in the 1972 Summit Series.

"In 1972 Team Canada helped inspire a generation of Canadians," said Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. "This new circulation coin may be a small token, but I hope — fifty years later — that it might help to inspire another."
