Hyundai Canada Recall Affects Nearly 40,000 Elantra Vehicles — Here's What You Need To Know

Transport Canada has published a car recall regarding almost 40,000 Hyundai Elantra vehicles across the country.

The automotive recall was initially posted on February 23 and later updated on February 28 with additional details. Canadian drivers who are affected by the ongoing Hyundai Canada recall will receive notice from Hyundai regarding the next steps to take.

Furthermore, Hyundai also offers an online verification tool that lets you determine if your vehicle has any current car recalls.

What You Need To Know: Transport Canada has flagged that Hydunai Elantra vehicles from 2015 and 2016 are being recalled due to an issue with the interior trunk release. "On certain vehicles, a part in the trunk release latch could fail," the federal department said.

Per the recall warning page, if this happens, the emergency trunk release located inside the trunk may not work properly — potentially hindering a trapped individual's ability to open it.

A total of 36,408 Hyundai Elantra's sold across Canada are affected by the recall. It's imperative to note that if a person is closed inside the trunk compartment, they may not be able to get out.

What You Need To Do: Owners are not required to take action until they hear from Hyundai. According to the recall page, Hyundai will notify owners by mail and advise them to take their vehicle to a dealership to replace the trunk latch assembly.

This issue could create a risk of injury, Transport Canada said. In this case, Canadian drivers should follow the steps set forth by the Hyundai notice. The latch replacement will come at no cost to the Hyundai Elantar car owners.
