The City of Montreal has unveiled its 2023 bike path plans. Officials say the 53 projects are designed to both improve existing infrastructure as well as extend the city's cycling network, amounting to 59.1 kilometres of changes.

The 2023 projects aren't just about plopping new bike lanes onto city streets, Montreal Executive Committee Member Responsible for Transportation and Mobility Sophie Mauzerolle assured in a press release. Instead, she said, "we're looking for a better sharing of space so that all users can get around safely." She cited Montreal's Vision Zero strategy, which aims to achieve zero annual deaths on the road network by 2040.

Bringing your bike onto the Montreal metro is like an eco-friendly transit turducken, and soon it'll be even easier to cart around your ten-speed while travelling across the city. Thanks to changes that will go into effect on April 15, 2023, cyclists will be able to carry their bikes on the metro more often with more "relaxed" regulations, according to a recent press release from the STM.

There will be extended hours, meaning that bikes can be brought into the train throughout the entire day on weekends and holidays, and during select periods Monday to Friday: from the metro's opening to 7 a.m., from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and from 6 p.m. to the metro's closing.

Ahuntsic-Cartierville is rolling out a new incentive to get people to take up winter biking. Looking to up the number of gritty red faces among its residents, the Montreal borough is giving $200 worth of winter biking gear to 50 residents.

Up for grabs are either studded tires or mudflaps, essential equipment for anyone who braves the city's treacherously icy streets and pools of slush on two tiny wheels. Also included are workshops and a "group outing" with other grant recipients.

The borough of Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles is partnering with the suburbs of Repentigny and Varennes to offer "bike shuttles" across the river this summer. The annual program allows cyclists to explore parks and bike paths at the tip of Montreal Island and on the North and South Shores.

The shuttle boats will make five trips daily between the Antoine-Beaudry house in Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles, the Parc de la Commune in Varennes and the Parc Saint-Laurent in Repentigny.

One Montreal cyclist lived out the exact nightmare that many of us fear when hopping on a bike this past Tuesday morning.

On March 8 a little after 10 a.m., the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal received a 911 call about a collision between a cyclist and an SUV in Westmount.

Montreal might finally build a pedestrian and bike bridge between the Verdun Beach area and Île des Sœurs, a part of the city that's otherwise difficult to quickly reach without a car.

There's currently no direct link between the two parts of the borough of Verdun. The only pedestrian crossing from Montreal Island to Île des Sœurs is the (albeit wide) protected sidewalk alongside the busy autoroute 15, which passes through the Sud-Ouest borough.

You may have seen them on one of your strolls or bike rides through the city. Striking, all-white " ghost bikes" marking the locations where cyclists have died following a car crash.

Vélo fantôme, the group that erects the haunting memorials, hopes they can "provoke reflection on the dangers of motorized vehicles."
