A Gatineau driver had a rough ride on January 28 after being fined for running the same stop sign multiple times in a matter of minutes.

According to Gatineau Police, the driver blew through a stop sign at the intersection of Saint-Joseph Boulevard and Saint-Jean-Bosco Street not once, but twice, just 11 minutes apart. And when stopped, they claimed to have not seen the sign either time.

UPDATE: Quebec Transport Minister Geneviève Guilbault unexpectedly announced on December 20, 2024, that the reduced cost of a driver's license in Quebec will be extended for a fourth year. Drivers with a Class 5 license and no demerit points will only pay $26.25 in 2025, rather than the previously estimated $118.41.

This extension is attributed to improved road safety and an increase in available funds in Quebec's auto insurance system.

Driving in Montreal is no easy feat. You've got loads of construction and a sea of orange cones, potholes galore and not to mention, the traffic. In fact, Montreal has the fourth worst traffic in Canada behind Toronto, Vancouver and Winnipeg, according to a recent report from TomTom.

TomTom, a traffic Index measuring 389 cities around the world by their travel time, fuel costs and CO2 emissions, indicated that the average travel time in Montreal is 18 minutes and 50 seconds per 10 kilometres, making the 514 the eighth most congested city in all of North America, scoring worse than other traffic-ridden spots such as Los Angeles, Boston and Chicago.

Predictions are that February is going to be brutal, and Montrealers will get a taste of that this week. Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Montreal and surrounding areas with meteorologists forecasting that the city will be hit with up to 25 cm of precipitation and strong winds, as of Wednesday and through the end of the week.

Blowing snow is of particular concern and the government agency warns that drivers and pedestrians should "prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions." Visibility will likely be reduced having a particular impact on rush hour traffic.

If you drive a car, the price of petrol may be making your head spin these days. In fact, according to CAA-Québec, Montreal gas prices are currently near some of the highest in recent history.

On October 16, CAA-Québec quoted the average pump price in Montreal at 150.9 cents per litre and the realistic pump price at 152 cents per litre.
