quebec covid-19

Quebec is no longer recommending the COVID-19 booster shot for healthy individuals. Public Health Director Dr. Luc Boileau announced the most recent change in vaccine protocol during a Thursday press conference, stating that only those who are at risk and who haven't had COVID-19 before should get the booster dose.

Most Quebecers have hybrid immunity to COVID-19 — protection through a previous vaccine and a SARS-CoV-2 infection — therefore regular booster shots are deemed unnecessary, Boileau told reporters.

In his first press conference appearance in many weeks, Health Minister Christian Dubé firmly recommended that Quebecers get up-to-date vaccinations as COVID-19 hospitalizations rise, again. The new bivalent Pfizer vaccine is just one of the options available, and Dubé, alongside Dr. Luc Boileau, confirmed that all available vaccines seem as effective as each other.

Although hospitalizations are high, Dubé emphasized that the growth in cases isn't exponential, and stated a goal of 200,000 vaccinations per week. Currently, the average is closer to 100,000, and that number hasn't reached Dubé's goal since last summer.

Provincial Health Minister Christian Dubé will join National Public Health Director Dr. Luc Boileau at a press conference Wednesday afternoon to discuss Quebec's current COVID-19 situation.

Conferences including both government and public health officials have been rare since Boileau's takeover as interim public health director following the resignation of Dr. Horacio Arruda in January.

In a July 21 press conference, the province's public health director, Luc Boileau, laid out the latest advice for mitigating the spread of COVID-19 in Quebec. These things are not what one might call riveting, so we can't blame you for skipping out. If you weren't in attendance, here are the opinions of several experts and the main takeaways.

First, Boileau made clear that, for the time being, he prefers to encourage what he called "basic precautionary measures" – including hand-washing, social distancing, and mask-wearing – rather than make them once again mandatory.

Interim National Public Health Director Dr. Luc Boileau will hold an 11 a.m. Quebec press conference Wednesday and is expected to confirm an end date for the province's mask mandate — at least in most spaces.

Multiple outlets report that Boileau is sticking to the May 14 deadline he tentatively set on April 28.

The Quebec mask mandate is projected to end in most enclosed public spaces on May 14, Interim National Public Health Director Dr. Luc Boileau said at a Thursday press conference.

He cautioned, however, that officials would not confirm an end date for face-covering rules until next week when, he said, they would have a better sense of the direction of the COVID-19 situation as the sixth wave winds down.

The government is updating its Quebec COVID-19 rapid test guide to encourage residents to insert the test swabs in their mouths, as well as their noses to increase the chances of an accurate test result.

As of Friday, the French-language rapid test user guide already includes the optional extra step. It asks test-takers to rub the swab against the inside of each cheek for five seconds before inserting it in each nostril.

The Quebec mask mandate will last longer than initially planned. While officials had said that face-covering rules would end in most places in mid-April, Interim National Public Health Director Dr. Luc Boileau confirmed on Tuesday that public health has officially recommended that the government maintain the mandate through April.

That means Quebecers will have to continue masking up in enclosed public spaces. Boileau said officials would continue to evaluate the necessity of the measure.

You may have been looking forward to packing away all your masks until the next pandemic, but they might be useful for a little longer. While officials had planned on ending the Quebec mask mandate for most public spaces in mid-April, it's looking like that deadline will be postponed.

"We're considering whether it would be appropriate to push back that date," interim National Public Health Director Dr. Luc Boileau said on Radio-Canada on April 3. "It's certainly conceivable that recommendations will go in that direction."

Quebec has officially entered its 6th COVID-19 wave, and this latest lousy pandemic news comes as the provincial government has now left most COVID-19 measures in the hands of Quebecers. In the words of Health Minister Christian Dubé, "people have to learn to live with the virus, to continue to protect themselves."

But how do you actually do that? You’re not alone if you feel bewildered.

Quebec has officially entered a sixth wave of COVID-19, just two months after a fifth wave struck the province.

Epidemiologist Dr. Gaston De Serres with the Institut national de santé publique du Québec confirmed the update this afternoon.

Mondays have slowly started to have a whole new meaning in Quebec. Instead of the day we dread right after the weekend, it's now become the day where certain Quebec COVID-19 rules get loosened.

And starting on Monday, February 28, there is a slew of different restrictions being lifted in the province, so here's a little glimpse at what's changing.
