If you've been contemplating pet adoption, the Montreal SPCA is making it a bit easier this month. On October 9, the shelter will be waiving all adoption fees for the entire day.

Right now, the SPCA is housing over 100 cats, around 20 dogs, and a number of rabbits and other small animals — all awaiting their forever homes. The shelter hit maximum capacity after a significant influx of animals, with a monthly average intake of 1,212 abandoned pets since the start of 2023.

Québec Solidaire is throwing a bone to pet owners in the midst of the province's ongoing housing crisis. The party introduced Quebec's first bill aimed at allowing animals in residential spaces in the National Assembly on May 25. If passed, the bill would make it illegal for rental properties to turn away tenants with four-legged roommates.

The legislation, presented by Laurier-Dorion MNA and Québec Solidaire housing critic Andrés Fontecilla, aims to relieve the stress of pet owners hunting for affordable housing.

Unlike many countries worldwide, Quebec has no regulations governing the treatment of animals raised for food, according to Montreal's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). The organization is engaged in a fight for legal changes, arguing that just because animals are being raised for human consumption doesn't mean they don't deserve humane living conditions.

The issue stems "from the system in which [producers] operate," acting director of the Montreal SPCA, Sophie Gaillard, explained in a recent statement.

The SPCA posted a heartbreaking message across its socials on April 8, sharing that a total of 30 dogs were saved from a fire that broke out in St-Bernard-de-Lacolle, seven of which have been taken in by the Montreal SPCA and will soon be up for adoption.

According to the SPCA, a residence with 32 dogs caught fire on March 30 and local animal controllers and the home owner's worked together to try and save them all. Sadly, two dogs died in the flames.
