With food prices still testing everyone's budget across Quebec, we recently looked at how much you can save by buying in bulk at Costco. But what about Walmart?

Known for its price-matching policies and low-cost reputation, Walmart is often seen as a go-to for affordable groceries. To put that to the test, we're building another standard grocery cart and comparing it across major Montreal stores

Walmart Canada is making some changes that its employees are likely to appreciate, and it might just make you consider switching careers if you're looking for something new.

On Wednesday, September 25, the company announced that it would be putting an additional $92 million toward pay increases for eligible supply chain workers, hourly retail staff, and frontline management.

Health Canada has issued a recall regarding several vitamins sold at Costco, Walmart, Pharmaprix/Shopper's Drug Mart and other stores across Canada, which could potentially pose a serious risk to the health and safety of Canadian consumers.

Costco and Walmart might not seem like the most logical pairing. The former occupies a special niche in the market, using the trappings of a warehouse and the allure of bulk supplies to entice customers to sign up for an annual membership. The latter competes with both traditional grocery chains and retailers of household goods, bringing the two concepts together under the appealing banner of a one-stop shop.

But they do have their similarities. Both claim to offer consumers a wide selection of products with among the lowest prices on the market. And both have a devout customer base.

We compared them to see which most merits that praise.

Sometimes a good and/or service is simply so distasteful, upsetting and/or unfinished that it pushes the consumer to file a complaint. Ideally, this is rare. But for large companies, it can be pretty common. The complaints are catalogued by the province's Office de la protection du consommateur (OPC). It shared the list of 10 Quebec companies with the most complaints in 2022 with MTL Blog sister publication Narcity Québec.

Topping the list this year was furniture store Brault & Martineau, which received 1.6% of the total 21,929 complaints (365) filed to the OPC in 2022. This is a slight improvement from last year, when the company was responsible for 2% of the total complaints received in 2021.

Walmart is getting a makeover, so to speak. The mega-retailer is giving its beauty department a boost, promising hundreds of new products from emerging brands on the shelves. Walmart Canada says the additions will make its offering more inclusive, with more makeup shades and products from businesses that are "owned and/or led by historically marginalized groups."

No need to stress about losing track of your favourite legacy brands — they'll still be available in store among the 3,000-plus existing beauty products. The new stuff, Walmart Canada Senior Category Manager for Cosmetics Rosslyn Barbuzzi said in a November 18 press release, will enhance the "beauty shopping experience" and "[introduce] customers to innovative solutions for skincare, trend-focused colour cosmetics and a shade range that is inclusive of everyone."

Walmart is building a new "fulfillment centre" outside Montreal, promising the new facility will "offer better product availability and quicker service" for both online and in-store shoppers.

The planned 457,000-square-foot warehouse in Vaudreuil-Dorion will serve as a delivery hub for Quebec and Atlantic Canada, with enough capacity to store 500,000 items and ship out 20 million products every year, Walmart said in a press release. It will be the company's first such depot in the province and is set to open in 2024.

A new Walmart Supercentre is set to open in Montreal's Marché Central shopping centre. Walmart says the new "state-of-the-art" store will have sustainable features, including a 125,000 square foot "green roof."

Renderings for the Supercentre show a rooftop greenhouse spanning nearly the whole length of the store.

Another day, another COVID-19 rumour. Walmart Canada has shot down claims it was sticking unvaccinated pharmacy customers in plexiglass cubicles after photos of human-height plastic screens began circulating online.

Quebec began requiring stores with an area of at least 1,500 square metres, such as Walmart and Canadian Tire, to screen customers for their proof of vaccination on January 24. The only exceptions are stores that offer grocery and pharmacy services.

Retail stores and telecom companies were unsurprisingly among those that were subject to the most consumer complaints in Quebec in the past year. But they still only represent a small fraction of the complaints sent to the province's consumer watchdog, the Office de la protection du consommateur (OPC).

According to information the OPC shared with MTL Blog, the office received a total of 21,442 complaints between December 1, 2020, and November 30, 2021.
