montreal freezing rain

Over 1 million Hydro-Québec customers lost power during the April 2023 ice storm. Now, some Quebec households who lost food as a result can claim up to $300 in compensation from the government.

As CTV News reports, residents who benefit from social assistance programs, such as the Programme Objectif Emploi, le Programme d’aide sociale, le Programme de solidarité sociale and the Programme de revenu de base, have until end-of-day May 12 to submit an application.

Over 660,000 Hydro-Québec customers still had no power as of 9:30 a.m. Friday, almost two days after a freezing rain storm battered the province. Just over half (340,532) of the remaining households without power were in Montreal.

Powerless hydro clients still numbered in the tens of thousands in five other regions, too: Montérégie (95,530), Laval (80,403), the Laurentides (58,385), Outaouais (54,458) and Lanaudière (33,130).

Despite fallen trees, slippery streets and a mass loss of electricity, Quebec has so far made it through the freezing rain storm without any "major emergency," according to Public Security Minister François Bonnardel. Officials are nevertheless urging caution — and common sense.

Online, Hydro-Québec has a list of safety advice for customers to follow both during and after a power outage. Meanwhile, in Montreal, Mayor Valérie Plante is calling on residents to limit travel outside the home and to keep emergency phone lines open for, well, emergencies.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for much of southwestern Quebec, including Montreal. The announcement comes ahead of what it says is a low-pressure system that could bring an early-spring-like "mix of precipitation" by the end of the week. Looks like Montreal weather is about to get gross.

The federal weather department is currently forecasting freezing rain, but the system and accompanying temperatures so far are casting some doubt on that assessment. The seven-day forecast for Montreal shows temperatures swinging from daytime highs of 4 C on Wednesday and Thursday and -3 C on Friday, to a frigid Friday nighttime low of -14 C.

The city could be a bit of a nightmare starting Friday morning as Montreal is expected to be hit with freezing rain. Environment Canada issued a weather warning for Montreal on November 24 saying that a "few hours" of freezing rain is expected during rush hour.

According to EnviroCan, freezing rain warnings are issued when rainfall occurs in sub-zero temperatures causing ice to build up, thus creating icy surfaces.

It appears that winter isn't over just yet! Although spring weather is finally looking up, Environment Canada is throwing Quebec a curveball (or, should we say, snowball?). A lot of precipitation is set to hit the province, with freezing rain and up to 25 centimetres of snow predicted for some areas.

"A weather system centered over the Great Lakes will affect the province of Quebec this weekend," Environment Canada said.

There's no better way to celebrate the weekend than with a lovely freezing rain warning! While spring weather is near, the city still has a bit more winter weather to deal with. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Montreal warning of freezing rain this weekend.
