Montreal boroughs are helping residents spruce up their gardens by distributing free plants and soil this spring. Personal balconies and communal green spaces can benefit from the program that requires participants to show a proof of residency, like public utility account or driver's license, to take advantage of a seasonal perk.

From Verdun to the Plateau, Montreal is distributing flowers, herb plants, seeds, and essential gardening supplies like compost and wood chips — all at no cost. The items are available on a self-serve basis, and residents mustbring their own shovels, wheelbarrows, and containers to transport the goods home.

A Montreal business suffered what police have described as significant damage after an arson attack Monday morning — the second this month, police say. The first was on May 7.

The business is located on rue Beaulac near the intersection with chemin de la Côte-Vertu in the borough of Saint-Laurent. The fire began sometime before 6:30 a.m., when the fire department called police to the scene as they worked to extinguish the blaze, SPVM spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils told the media.

Boulevard Saint-Laurent restaurant Main Deli has closed its doors for the last time, according to reports. The Montreal smoked meat purveyor's website no longer functions. Google has labelled the restaurant "permanently closed."

CTV News reports the restaurant left a notice on its front door announcing the closure. The Montreal Gazette cites one Frédéric Serre for the news. In a Facebook post, he purports to have spoken to the restaurant manager, who reportedly named "high food and labour costs as reasons behind the sudden closure," Serre wrote.

Montreal is set to add new reserved bus lanes to parts of four major thoroughfares, adding to its extensive network of public transit corridors. The city already claims to have the most kilometres of bus-only lanes on the continent. The additional lanes will bring Montreal's total to 300 kilometres, facilitating upwards of 20,000 daily trips, officials say.

The new lanes will be on chemin de la Côte-Saint-Luc and rue Sherbrooke Ouest in the borough of Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, rue Provost in the borough of Lachine, and boulevard Saint-Laurent in the boroughs of Ahuntsic-Cartierville and Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension.

T&T CEO Tina Lee has promised a wide range of enticing products and store features, including a "row of fish tanks that have enough water in them to fill your backyard swimming pool;" a snack aisle with scallop, salted egg yolk, and wasabi-flavoured chips; ready-to-eat hot food stations; and a bakery with cakes Lee says are "less sweet than the typical supermarket cake."

Most Montrealers know the giant, red cursive lettering on boulevard Saint-Laurent in Little Italy, but those who haven't stepped foot in the famous Fruiterie Milano might not know that behind the bold signage is an expansive showroom with an equally bold selection of goods, including walls of oils and more cheese than you could taste in a lifetime.
