montreal boroughs

Montreal boroughs are helping residents spruce up their gardens by distributing free plants and soil this spring. Personal balconies and communal green spaces can benefit from the program that requires participants to show a proof of residency, like public utility account or driver's license, to take advantage of a seasonal perk.

From Verdun to the Plateau, Montreal is distributing flowers, herb plants, seeds, and essential gardening supplies like compost and wood chips — all at no cost. The items are available on a self-serve basis, and residents mustbring their own shovels, wheelbarrows, and containers to transport the goods home.

Several Montreal boroughs are issuing a playful call-to-shovels, inviting its citizens to sprinkle their own brand of magic on their balconies and gardens. The annual city-wide plant giveaway is set to sprout at the end of the month.

Ever looked at your Montreal neighbourhood and thought, "Hey, you'd make a fine cocktail?" No? Well, Absolut Vodka has. The company teamed up with local bartenders to create concoctions that'll have you drinking in the essence of your ‘hood — quite literally.

The project, dubbed "Mix Your Neighbourhood," kicked off by asking mixologists across Canada to spill the beans on what makes their neighbourhoods tick. Flavours, ingredients and vibes were all thrown into the mix. Absolut fed the juicy data into an AI image generator that whipped up some eye-catching pics based on the intel.

Montreal, like any city, is full of unspoken rules, factoids and bewildering practices — threads that bind the fabric of urban life and give it its unique texture. That locally known common knowledge can baffle newcomers and visitors.

Inspired by posts on other city Reddit pages, 25-year-old Olivier Alix (u/Spiritual_Panic6924 on Reddit, @oliiivier on Instagram) took to r/Montreal to solicit some of the city's lesser-known facts, asking "what's some basic knowledge about MTL that most people don't know?"

Ahuntsic-Cartierville is rolling out a new incentive to get people to take up winter biking. Looking to up the number of gritty red faces among its residents, the Montreal borough is giving $200 worth of winter biking gear to 50 residents.

Up for grabs are either studded tires or mudflaps, essential equipment for anyone who braves the city's treacherously icy streets and pools of slush on two tiny wheels. Also included are workshops and a "group outing" with other grant recipients.

Free plant giveaways are returning to at least four Montreal boroughs this spring. Three others are either hinting at forthcoming giveaway plans or will give out other gardening items.

So far, the Plateau Mont-Royal, Rosemont–La-Petite-Patrie, and Ahuntsic-Cartierville have shared giveaway details on their official Facebook pages. Ville en Vert, a local organization that advocates for sustainable development, has also published plant giveaway plans for Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension.

City of Montreal. Island of Montreal. Agglomeration of Montreal. Montreal metropolitan community. All called Montreal. Not all the same thing.

We've all had the experience. The arrival of warmer weather emboldens you to leave a bedroom window open overnight. It might be a little chilly but you don't care; you're just excited to get some fresh air. The dawn breaks and you crack open your eyes as the cool, stale morning air pours into the room. And just as you begin to allow yourself to indulgently slip into slumber once more, BOOM, Montreal construction noise shakes you out of bed.

Our city is known for its cacophony of power tools and falling rubble. But Montrealers might not know there are indeed some limits on when this noise can happen — as well as ways to complain about it.

Montreal might finally build a pedestrian and bike bridge between the Verdun Beach area and Île des Sœurs, a part of the city that's otherwise difficult to quickly reach without a car.

There's currently no direct link between the two parts of the borough of Verdun. The only pedestrian crossing from Montreal Island to Île des Sœurs is the (albeit wide) protected sidewalk alongside the busy autoroute 15, which passes through the Sud-Ouest borough.

Prochaine station: a huge mortgage payment. A series of Montreal metro maps by Via Capitale real estate broker Charlyse Amoussou shows median condo prices around every station in 2021.

Amoussou used Centris data from January to December 2021 to compile the figures shown in the maps, which represent the selling prices of properties within a one-kilometre radius of STM metro stops.
