Watching a movie under the stars hits different — especially when it's free.

It's the end of an era for Cinémas Guzzo — or at least for now. The popular Quebec movie theatre chain announced on social media Friday that all seven of its remaining locations will be "temporarily closing."

"Dear Clients, due to circumstances beyond our control, we are temporarily closing our cinemas," the company's latest Instagram post reads. "We thank you for your loyalty over the years and look forward to welcoming you back soon."

Jackie Chan is currently in Montreal filming the next instalment of the Karate Kid film series alongside Ben Wang, Ralph Macchio and Ming-Na Wen, to name a few.

The news dropped back in April that the movie would be filmed in Montreal in collaboration with Grandé Studios, a Montreal-based production company. "Karate Kid has begun production in our studios here in Montreal! We are honoured to be hosting Sony Pictures and the amazing crew on this new film,' Grandé Studio wrote on its Instagram page back on April 4.

Montreal is set for a blockbuster year as major film and TV crews roll into town. City streets will turn into movie sets, ready for heartwrenching monologues and (hopefully) some high-speed chases.

The city attracts film productions for its aesthetic appeal and practical benefits. Tax incentives, a range of filming locations, and a skilled workforce make it a budget-friendly option for big projects looking for a European touch without crossing the Atlantic.

Montreal's SAT (the Société des arts technologiques) has released its summer 2022 program, including yet another set of free outdoor movie screenings in downtown Montreal. But unlike other film festivals and events coming to the city this summer, these will feature live soundtrack performances.

And not just regular presentations of original film soundtracks, either. SAT ciné-concert attendees will witness featured artists improvise all-new soundtracks — a spectacle of live invention.

At least three festivals will present free film screenings in Montreal parks this summer. All told, Montrealers will have dozens of opportunities to catch some flicks with their neighbours and friends under the (barely-visible-through-the-urban-light-pollution) stars.

Here's a breakdown of public screenings in 2022.

Film Noir au Canal, a celebration of hard-boiled police dramas, is coming back again this year for its sixth edition. Local filmmaker and Rear Window buff Louis Bélanger will host the festival's opening night, which will also feature a musical prelude by Ukulélé Club de Montréal before the screening begins at 9 p.m.

It appears the cast of Scream 6 has descended on Montreal. At least three cast members have dropped hints on social media about their arrival in the city.

The Scream 6 project is purportedly using the working title Blackmore to mask its progress and whereabouts. According to ACTRA Montreal, the local union of recorded media performers, the production of Blackmore will take place in the city between June 6 and August 10.

Film noir au Canal, a festival of dark hard-boiled dramas, is returning for the first time in three years with free movie screenings along the Lachine Canal this summer. Since MTL Blog first reported on its comeback, organizers have released a few more details about the highly-anticipated event.

Like previous editions, Film noir au Canal 2022 will take place in Square Saint-Patrick, a park between the canal and rue Wellington in Pointe-Saint-Charles. Live musical performances and presentations by genre experts will set the mood as attendees set up in the shadow of the rusting bridges and brick edifices of the former industrial corridor.

Do you like scary movies? It looks like Scream 6 is set to start filming in Montreal this spring. According to fan speculation, the Scream 6 project is using the working title Blackmore to mask (get it?) production. ACTRA Montreal says Blackmore will be shooting in the city between June 6 and August 10, 2022.

Courteney Cox is set to reprise her role as Gale Weathers in the latest iteration of the franchise.

Dear Harry Potter fans in Quebec, we come bearing good news! Participating Cineplex cinemas will be playing Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in theatres this April and it'll only cost you $2.99 plus tax to see.

True fans have probably seen this film dozens of times by now, but the magical part of seeing it in theatres again is that it'll provide you with a blast from the past of when you went to go see it in a cinema when it was first released in 2001.

Film noir au canal is back! Since 2015, the event has celebrated hard-boiled police dramas with free outdoor movie screenings on the banks of Montreal's Lachine Canal.
