sugar shack montreal

Spring in Quebec signals the start of something sweet: sugar shack season. Cabanes à sucres are institutions where the sap of the sugar maple gets its moment of glory, transformed into the syrup we all know and crave. If you're imagining a kitchen in the middle of the woods, the air thick with the scent of boiling sap, you'd be getting warm.

At these shacks, the menu reads like a celebration of all things maple. Everything is hearty, indulgent, and drenched in syrup. From the soup starter to the meat-heavy main courses, everything gets a touch of the sweet stuff. And don't forget about the pièce de résistance: tire sur la neige. The maple taffy pulled on snow is the kind of DIY dessert that has kids and adults alike lining up for a second helping.

Sugar shacks are notoriously heavy on the maple and the meat, but one Montreal restaurant is making the classic Quebec meal more accessible to those who prefer a plant-based diet. On March 18 and 19, Mile End vegan diner Mimi & Jones is hosting a two-day cabane à sucre style brunch with mimosa specials.

For $25 per person, guests can indulge in all the sweet and savoury dishes, including scrambled tofu, seitan bacon, pancakes with maple syrup, homemade beans, cretons, toast, breakfast potatoes and maple taffy. It's no big secret that the COVID-19 pandemic has totally sucked. Between lockdowns, curfews, contagion scares and loss, it can be hard to find anyone who wasn't negatively impacted by the last two years. That's why it's so refreshing to find at least one industry that was completely rejuvenated because of the pandemic: Quebec's sugar shacks.

In 2020, sugar shacks were faced with the same issue as restaurants and retailers: between restrictions and social distancing guidelines, nobody was able to enjoy going to sugar shacks for outdoor fun and sweet treats.
