Springtime in Montreal usually doesn't feature palm trees, but for the next few weeks, Sainte-Catherine East near Beaudry metro will. Part of the Montreal Village is now doubling as a sunny Californian city from decades ago. A slice of San Diego circa the 1980s has mysteriously sprouted in the neighbourhood near downtown.

Trees are covered in fake leaves ziptied onto branches that look real at first glance. And ginormous tropical trees line the sidewalks — not your typical Montreal flora.

Late summer nights in the Montreal Village are about to get more fun. The borough of Ville-Marie is granting special permission to around 40 terrasses in the neighbourhood to stay open until 3 a.m. on weekends starting this May, the Société de développement commercial (SDC) du Village has announced.

The measure will take effect on May 19 and conclude on October 9. Participating terrasses will be able to host patrons until 3 a.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, as well as on four regular Sundays: May 21, July 30, September 3 and October 8.

The city has announced the Montreal streets which will be pedestrianized for the summer of 2022. Since social distancing requirements inspired the city to block off extra space for residents in 2020, the summer pedestrian thoroughfares have become somewhat of a staple.

Terrasses line the sidewalks, shop owners put up stalls on the curb, and Montrealers can enjoy pleasant strolls without the noise, danger, and pollution of vehicular traffic.

On September 28 at 4:30 a.m., this store in Montreal was broken into, having its window smashed. Then, the exact same thing happened again on October 12, the owner of OSEZ told MTL Blog.
